The land had been in the family since 1468, when it was handed over to them by King James III. In 1633, the leader of the family was given the titles of Earl of Wemyss and Lord Elcho. Elcho Castle and it’s lands stayed the property of the Wemyss family until 1929. It was then, the 11th Earl of Wemyss, gave the castle to the nation of Scotland. The castle has recently been restored and is now in the care of Historic Scotland.

Huntingtower Castle

Located just west of Perth is the medieval pile of Huntingtower Castle. Although the structure is medieval in origin, it has been redeveloped significantly throughout the majoprity of it’s history. The Ruthven family were the owners of the lands and castle from the 12th to 17th century. During this time the castle consisted of two separate towers, built three meters apart. When the Murray family took occupancy, later on in the 17th century, they decided to merge the two towers, making the house look more like a ordinary country abode. The bridging work between the two towers is still clearly noticeable today, both on the interior and exterior.

The Earl was away, fighting in the Crusade’s, when John I Comyn began construction of Blair Castle on his land. As soon as the Earl returned home he complained to the Scottish King, Alexander III about his neighbor, and his lands were returned. Rather than destroying the tower than John I Comyn had built, the Earl decided to incorporate the tower into his own castle. A Great Hall and a number of vaulted chambers were added to the castle over the centuries, by  various Earls. It was the 2nd Duke of Atholl who, in 1740, decided to restore the castle as a Georgian Mansion.

Killiecrankie Visitor Centre

During the time of the Jacobites Killiecrankie, near to Pitlochry, found itself filled with the crys of battle. The government soldiers were defeated by the Jacobites, under the guidance of Bonnie Dundee. During the bloody battle a soldier evaded capture by jumping over the River Garry, which became known as, Soldier’s Leap. The area of the gorge and pass were a popular haunt of Queen Victoria.

Stirling has played an important role in Scotland’s history, especially during vitally important moments. The city and surrounding area has a fantastic number of excellent visitor attractions and a multitude of photographic opportunities. Stirling Castle

Situated two hundred and fifty feet above the city of Stirling, and surrounded on three sides by steep cliffs is Stirling Castle. Stirling Castle is very important in the history of Scotland, there have been many coronations within the castle, including Mary Queen of Scots’ in 1543. Stirling Castle was also witness to a violent murder in 1452. The eighth Earl of Douglas was victim to James II in 1452. The castle is home to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, even though they are, unfortunately no longer garrisoned there. However, the regimental museum of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, is located inside the castle.

Stirling Old Town Jail

The Stirling Old Town Jail we see today was not the original jail, for 400 years, Stirling’s prisoners were committed in the Old Tollbooth Jail. This jail was seriously overcrowded, and smelled disgusting, with twenty four prisoners to each cell, and zero sanitation. The Tollbooth jail was condemned, due to the inhuman living conditions there, and in 1847 the current jail opened. Although the jail was classed as a custodial jail, from 1888 to 1935, it was also the only military jail in Scotland. Today the Stirling Old Town Jail is a visitor attraction, and was only restored in the 1990’s. As well as guided tours, there is a glass paneled elevator that transports one to a viewing deck at the top of the jail. From commanding viewpoint one is able to gaze out across the Forth Valley, and take in the spectacular view of the Highland mountains.

Argyll’s Lodging

Argyll’s Lodging is found on Castle Wynd, located in the center of Stirling and is Scotland’s finest surviving renaissance house. The mansion was erected around 1630, by Sir William Alexander, originator of Nova Scotia and Viscount Canada. Sir William Alexander who was appointed Secretary of State for Scotland, and then became the first Earl of Stirling. Argyll’s Lodging passed to the Argyll family on his death and was further extended by the ninth Earl in 1666. The rooms which include the laigh hall, dining room, bed chamber and drawing room, have all been sympathetically furnished and restored, as they would have looked when the 9th Earl lived there, circa 1680.
