1. Endings

I appreciate this model because it is one of the few that I’ve seen that recognizes that all changes – whether the “good” ones or the “bad” ones – start with something ending in our lives.  No matter how much we might be anticipating the change (e.g., beginning college, new job, getting married, moving), the new thing first of all requires that we give something up. 

We almost always have to forfeit the well-known, the accustomed, and the comfortable.  This may take the form of modifications to existing relationships, relocating from a neighborhood where we’ve lived for years, releasing our acknowledged position of “expert” or being the “go-to” person at work.   Maybe we’ll have to walk away from friendships that we’ve had for our entire lives.  Friends with whom we attended school.  A big comfortable house, with a large backyard for relaxing, plenty of room for the children and all their friends.  Maybe it’s something as simple as a short commute to work.

But, regardless of the transition in our lives, most likely the first thing(s) that we’ll observe are the things we must bid goodbye.

2. Neutral Zone

The next part of the model is I think the most difficult one.  We’ve given up all the accepted, secure, comfortable, well-known things that we’ve relied upon to simplify our routine decision-making processes, a support group we can share our lives with.  We’ve had to release all the reliable “safety nets” we’ve integrated into our lives:  the insurance agent we’ve relied upon, our child’s schoolteacher, the community center where we’ve become well established and have a solid social network.

The Neutral Zone is the place where all the “old stuff” has to be left behind, but the related new support structures haven’t yet been created, or if built, they are still new and rather fragile.

Existence in the Neutral Zone can be very daunting as you live in a state of novelty, ambiguity and uncertainty.  But diligence and perseverence are the keys to a victorious passage through the Neutral Zone.

3. Beginnings

Gradually, over time, we get things built for our new existence.  If we’ve just started college, we’ve attended all our classes, met the teachers, developed a social network, and perhaps joined a fraternity or sorority.  If launching a new employment, we’ve gotten over the initial shock of not even knowing where the water cooler and the rest rooms are, to having a definite role to perform, and we’ve learned a lot about how to peform the duties expected of us.  We’ve met our bosses and many of our peers (perhaps we’re no longer the “newest” kid on the block).  We’ve probably found a new residence, unpacked most (if not all) the boxes.  We know where the best grocery stores, drug stores, department stores, gas stations, beauty salons, and doctors are found. 

Things are finally settling into a daily pattern, and life is becoming more normal – and more predictable every day (although it will never become wholly static, or static).

We’re adapting and growing into our new roles and adjusting to our new location.

All this takes time.  The worst thing you can do is expect that it will come to pass overnight – it won’t.  Give yourself, and your family, sufficient time and space, to adapt to the change – and they will!
